There is a lot of information out there on soy and vegetable wax but this article is all you’ll need if you are interested in soy wax and its benefits! I am going to be talking about soy wax, because that’s what we sell, but the benefits also apply to other vegetable waxes such as palm wax.
1) Using soy/vegetable wax makes our planet happyTweet This
As we should all know by now, our planet is finite. Her resources have taken 100’s of millions of years to form and we are using them up in only a few thousand. If we continue to use oil based paraffin in our candles one day it will run out. There is no doubt about that.
Soy wax comes from the soya plant that is predominantly grown in the US. The beans are cracked, de-hulled and rolled into flakes that are then hydrogenated to alter the melting point and its state at room temperature. Because of the hydrogenation process, which is a man made process, soy wax can not be called organic. So dont be fooled!
As the soya plant can be regrown every year, and when managed correctly, it is a sustainable source that also provides employment to the farmers and manufacturers involved.
2) No soot compared to paraffin
This is one of the main reasons soy wax is prefered by people who are health conscious and care about their indoor environment.
Have you noticed the black marks on the walls or ceiling in your home?
I actually woke up with black soot in my nose one morning from burning a paraffin candle during the night (not safe, I know 🙁
This is from the particles that are released by paraffin wax, which is a residue from the production of oil. Soy wax does not do this, which makes it a lot safer to burn indoors. But do be aware, the fragrance or essential oils do get released so make sure if you are buying a candle that they have safety certs. If the wax has been dyed, then the dye will get released also, best to go for white if you think that would bother you.
3) Suitable for asthmatics
40% of people, who suffer from asthma, said that scented candles were triggers for them around Christmas time, according to Asthma UK. Soy wax candles are advised by this organisation and also the Asthma Society of Canada, because they release less particles than an oil based wax. Obviously this will not be accurate for all asthma sufferers, especially if you suffer particularly badly, but it is definitely a far better alternative.
It is also something to consider if you are having guests over, and know that they have asthma, to buy soy instead of paraffin. It may be a little more expensive but it will help to avoid a possible trip to A&E.
You can read more on this subject on my post about Best Candles for Asthma
4) Memories and emotions are attached with a scentTweet This
There are a lot of scientific reports out there on how memories are affected by scent. But you know yourself when you smell something, it automatically reminds you of someone or somewhere that you have smelt it before.
Either good or bad memories, you might not have recalled that memory had it not been for the wiff of a certain scent as you walked by.
There have also been studies into emotions being transferred and picked up by others through the scent in sweat. Here is an article about how people transmit happiness by smell. It is similar to when you see someone smiling, it makes you feel better and happier. When you smell a happy person, it makes you happy! We may not be consciously aware of it, but it is still there.
How is this related to soy wax? Well if you have a Spa scented soy wax candle burning during a dinner party or at a happy event, and everyone is enjoying themselves and laughing, the next time they smell that Spa scent they are going to relate it to enjoyment and laughter and remember that happy evening!
5) Essential oils and fragrance oils
Essential oils are the pure oils that are extracted from the flower, stem, leaves and root of a plant. You can use them in their oil form for skin treatments or it can be added to soy wax and be released into the air. Each scent of oil has its own benefits, for example: Bergamot
- Uplifting, anti-bacterial, sedative…
- “Bergamot oil is all about one’s sense of self: self-love, self-worth, self-acceptance, self-judgment, self-hatred.”
- “Bergamot oil can work as a powerful antidepressant if the source of our sadness or heaviness is found within our sense of self.”
I got this information from this website that lists dozens of plant essential oils, their uses and blends. Check it out here, it is well worth a look I promise!
6) Suitable for pregnant women and around newborn babies
- Because it is soy wax, you are not breathing in those harmful particles into your lungs, and into your baby’s blood stream.
- If the candle contains essential oils, the oil will bring its own specific benefits.
- The scent will help you to relax, creating an emotional balance which will have a knock on effect to your baby.
I really hope this helps you see why soy wax is the best choice if you are buying scented candles. I think it is important to look after your home environment because we spend so much time there. So remember, choose soy!
